An American man has drowned while proposing to his girlfriend underwater at an island off the coast of Tanzania. Steven Weber and Kenesha Antoine were staying on Pemba Island, in a wooden cabin with a bedroom submerged beneath the ocean surface off the east coast of Africa.

Weber proposed on Thursday, Sept. 22, 2019, by swimming underwater holding a note against the glass that said  “I can’t hold my breath long enough to tell you everything I love about you. BUT…Everything I love about you I love more EVERY DAY! “Will you please be my WIFE,” the note continued to say “Marry me???”

Sadly Weber never came back to the surface. In a Facebook post, Antoine said “You never emerged from those depths, so you never got to hear my answer, ‘Yes! Yes! A million times, yes, I will marry you!!’ ”

The Matana Resort issued a statement on Saturday, confirming Weber’s death, “Our sincerest condolences, thoughts, and prayers are with his girlfriend, families, and friends impacted by this tragic accident,” said Matthew Saus, the resort’s CEO.
