The second Sonic the Hedgehog live-action movie was really good, so let’s talk about it.

Sonic the Hedgehog is a Japanese video game franchise created and owned by SEGA. The series follows Sonic, an anthropomorphic blue hedgehog who battles the mad scientist Doctor Eggman. The franchise has 31 main games, along with several spin-offs that go into other game genres and 6 animated shows. The first live-action Sonic movie came out in June of 2020 and now has a sequel.

The movie follows Sonic after finding out that Eggman is still alive and has recruited Knuckles the Echidna to kill or capture him. Along the way, he meets Tails, his best friend throughout the franchise. The two find out that Knuckles is after The Master Emerald after his tribe, the Echidnas, was killed off by Sonic’s mentor Longclaw’s clan. Knuckles wants to get The Master Emerald to fulfill his self-proclaimed destiny. He works with Eggman to get the Emerald and to make a long story short, Eggman takes the Emerald and is then defeated by Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles. The three begin living together with Sonic’s adoptive human parents.

The movie lived up to my expectations. It had everything I felt it would have. Comedy, tragedy, good character display, and a nice plot overall. As a longtime fan of the franchise, the movie really did meet all my needs, especially Knuckles’ characterization. I feel like nobody truly talks about how tragic his story is, and how serious of a character he can be. With the Sonic Boom show, Knuckles was dumbed down a lot and it is like he was stripped of his past. I like how the movie portrayed how serious he was, though I wish he did have a bit more comedic moments.

Ethan Lebel stated, “The movie was a lot of fun to watch, it made me laugh and I felt like I was kinda going through the story with the characters. I really liked Rachel, [Sonic’s adoptive mother’s sister] and I loved Tails.”
