The Percy Jackson and The Olympians series has been picked up by Disney 9 years after the last movie adaptation came out. It was first reported being in the works in May 2020, with casting being currently underway. The author Rick Riordan and Jon Steinberg will write the pilot with James Bobin directing.

“With Rick Riordan, Jon Steinberg, and Dan Shotz leading our creative team, we’re deep into creating a compelling TV series worthy of the heroic mythological characters that millions of Percy Jackson readers know are well-worth caring about, and we’re eager to invite Disney+ audiences into stories that are true to the blockbuster franchise and full of anticipation, humor, surprise, and mystery,” said Ayo Davis, president of Disney Branded Television.

The Percy Jackson book series comprises The Lightning Thief, The Sea of Monsters, The Titan’s Curse, The Battle of the Labyrinth, and The Last Olympian. Riordan has also published the companion book The Demigod Files as well as The Demigod Diaries.

Both The Lightning Thief and The Sea of Monsters were made into films; the first released in 2010 and the second in 2013. The films together grossed over $425 million worldwide.

Rue Williams feels, “I was always a fan of Greek mythology. So obviously I was super into Percy Jackson. Reading, watching, whatever I could do. I’m really happy they’re making more of the series! People always talk about Greek mythology but never have movies or shows for it. Like I’m so tired of rewatching the series and rewatching Blood of Zeus you know? It’s about time they made more!”
